Tallahassee Wildlife Removal Tip of the Month

Armadillo Trapping
People use different tactics when it comes to Tallahassee armadillo trapping. They will try to set up steel snares over their burrows or erect directional fencing in various patterns. A major consideration in trapping armadillos is in the understanding of their behavior. Armadillos are mostly nocturnal Florida animals and they generally live underground in burrows. They habitually dig in the soil for grubs and worms. They do not have good eyesight and they tend to bump into objects.

A live cage is ideal as a trap. The trap has to be at least thirty inches long and twelve inches high. The traps have to be built sturdy as Florida armadillos are tough and they can easily damage a trap if it is not strong. Apart from few vegetables, there is not much that can be kept in the trap as bait because armadillos mainly eat only that food that they dig out of a yard. They do not like to eat whatever food that they find lying on a surface or in cages. People keep anything in the bait ranging from bananas to even rotten cabbage. Some people even keep earthworms in the caged trap. It has been found that bait in the cage traps left for armadillos has attracted other creatures like opossums and raccoons. They do get lured by the scent of other Tallahassee armadillos so a trap that has already caught other armadillos will be very helpful. The location and the setting up of the trap are also important factors.

Armadillos have a pattern of travel on their selected pathways. They want to relate to edges of buildings and objects in certain ways. They make certain trails on a property even if their trails are subtle. Sometimes, they will dig about thirty burrows in a yard and they will be sharing these burrows. The traps have to be set on the pathway to these burrows. They need to be erected flat and they have to be flush to the ground level. If they wobble or rattle, the Tallahassee armadillos will not go in these caged traps. The trigger pan of these traps also has to be cleared of the connecting bar and all debris. The armadillos have to be given clear line of sight for them to take entry. Wooden blocks can be used to steer them in the cages for the last couple of feet near the trap. The bottom of the trap could be lined with debris such as plants. The trap should not contain any bad odor as it will drive away the armadillos. The pan tension has to be kept high to avoid misfiring from external bumping because the Florida armadillos are sufficiently heavy to trigger the traps once they are inside.
